A check on the serial number confirmed my worst fear, the guitar was 3 years old. There also had clearly been an amateur attempt to adjust the truss rod, the screws holding the cover were burred over. Furthermore, the guitar was buzzing badly at the 8th fret and upon checking there was a severe twist in the neck.
